JONES - Chapters 3 & 4

 Chapter 3:

"Like all other major brand names is not so much about selling concrete stuff, but more about promoting a lifestyle."

"As a particular part of their struggle, YOMANGO promotes the tactics of illegality and in particular, stealing."

The Magic Bag

These two quotes and the art project just made me think about my experience as a cashier. I think YOMANGO's promotions of social disobedience in the form of stealing is very unique and thought provoking. I've seen individuals attempt to steal food, feminine napkins, and even clothing for their children. For me, it's more of a question of, "How has our society/economy failed these individuals that they are now here in this moment?" I think this invention is a push back to how we often pass judgement based off one perspective of a situation that's presented to us. Social disobedience in the case of protecting the well-being of yourself and others, is something I can get behind. I think their way of utilizing this bag is genius.

Chapter 4:

"CAE's focus has been on the exploration of the relations and intersections between art, critical theory, technology, and political activism."

"In executing projects such as this one... hope to contribute to... focusing on issues that are of direct interest to people, and so contribute to making the meaning of scientific initiatives immediate and concrete..."

Free Range Grain

I think it is fascinating, and a positive for this group to be finding a solution by merging all these different aspects. This has a personal attribute, considering that I've switched my lifestyle away from meats and mostly GMO foods, an towards a plant based and vegetarian lifestyle. I think there's a lot of superstition about what can be done by using plants to encourage a healthier and sustainable lifestyle for ourselves. I think there's something admirable about this group delving into the world of biotechnology and making it a part of their message to our society. I see it as a push back to the normality of unhealthy foods being more accessible/affordable to us, while also playing part in damaging to our planet (CO2 emissions, health concerns in humans, fisheries..)
