One of the art pieces I chose that I found the most interesting in my opinion is “Thank God I’m Home,'' said Marcel Brown” because of the colors, it just stood out to me the most, especially the purple and blue. The house in the background seems like it is the color blue mixed with purple. Next to it, there is a round circle which is purple. In the middle of the painting it seems like bread or some type of sandwich which is the color light brown. All of these colors and paintings have their own meaning. When I first saw that the painting had a background statement to it, I was a bit surprised because not many of the paintings usually do so, just seeing that immediately caught my attention. The reason being is because sometimes I don’t get what the artists are trying to say in their paintings so it’s nice seeing that this one actually had a backstory to it which makes it even more meaningful because it wants the audience to actually know the real story instead of just wondering what it means. The message I interpreted from this painting is the artist and the person that this actually occurred to want people to know what it's like to have been wrongfully imprisoned over something they didn’t do and how you can create this issue into an art form. They want individuals to see that people being wrongfully imprisoned has been going on for a very long time and if we don’t put a stop to it, it will continue to happen. This work is indeed considered to be activist because it is trying to tell others how big of an issue individuals are being wrongfully imprisoned for. A quote from a reading we did from “Memes Are Our Generation’s Protest Art” stated “At their core, all memes, regardless of their politics, are a tool for expression” I found it to be relatable to this because art isn’t just one specific way or meaning. It can be made or interpreted in many aspects or created in different ways. People can create art however they like and it have a huge meaning behind it.
Another artwork that stood out to me is “At Home With Family” because of the vibrant colors it has. The purple and gold are extremely vibrant but at the time it faded. The clouds are the color gold, some are really vibrant and the others are light faded. There is a window and inside there is a family. It is the color purple. This piece really addresses how incarnation really takes a toll on many individuals that they start missing their homes. How a lot of things people are allowed to do on a daily basis, as those who are wrongfully imprisoned just want a chance to do normal things. This raises awareness that the justice system is extremely flawed. I’ve heard in other cases how sometimes they don’t even have evidence to arrest a person but they do anyway just because they have the authority to. It’s been years with this going on and nothing has changed at all. It really questions if they even care about the public or all they care about is money. The reason I’m stating if the government only cares about the money is because people being imprisoned helps them gain money somehow. This piece is activist because it’s making people aware of what’s going on with the justice system and how it needs to change. There isn’t just one person’s story but many, which is an issue. It’s extremely devastating to hear and see that this has been occurring for years yet no one has put a stop to it or made an effort to change it. A quote by Kimberly Drew “We all have the power to engage with and write about art.” This quote I found to be relatable because individuals have the strength to create many things and it has an enormous impact on people.
This picture of my little brother and I, brings me back to seeing how the small things in life many of us take for granted. Just being able to walk around the park or be with family. Individuals who have been wrongfully imprisoned wish to do those things just once. People who are imprisoned have a schedule for every little thing. They don’t have control in what they want to eat or when they get to see their family. I understand that most of these people in prison have actually committed awful crimes but I don’t find it justified to make them basically be treated like animals in a cage. It’s extremely disgusting in my opinion to see that nothing has changed and I feel as it keeps getting worse because there is always some current news about someone who’s been in prison for so long yet they were innocent since the start.
