The American Civil Rights movement was a pivotal point in American history and revolutionized equality in this country. African Americans were once looked at as low lives and less than human people until many leaders came forth and symbols for the movement often worked together for the enhancement of black people. People like Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King jr., Malcolm X, Ruby Bridges, and many other of the unsung heroes of the civil rights movement. There many people and groups that were involved that you probably never heard of such as Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) are just a fraction of groups that contributed to the movement. Although a lot of these peoples and groups put in the work there was a lot more behind the scenes of the movement. One group that was important to the movement were the black panthers. The Black Panther Party for Self Defense was the era's most influential militant black power organization. Its members confronted politicians, challenged the police, and protected black citizens from brutality. They were recognized for many things but the main point was the clothing that they wore. The black panthers were recognized for wearing all black clothing from head to toe. For years fashion has been a statement especially against a political power. That is what I am conveying in my intervention photos by wearing all black. I am replicating their way of fashion because for so many years it stood for the uprising for black people and rebellion against a power that suppressed them for so long. It was an act of defiance so to speak, to deliver a strong message. It is the same message in the readings of Siegler “Two acts of defiance, nearly fifty years apart, deliver the same message: I refuse to be afraid. Art is a very powerful tool and especially how it is used and conveyed. One piece of art can change a whole entire culture. In chapter 5 of Siegler's reading stated that “The anger and outrage over Emmett Tills murder was one of the catalyst that sparked the civil rights movement. And it was all because of a photo. This movement is very important to me because as long as there are people who are in a position of authority can get away with murdering people who look like me there will never be equality and I will always support it in anyway I can and help demonstrate why it is so important.
Checked all boxes. For the final intervention think about being even more intentional with your outreach. How can you interact more with the people you want to reach and be more creative in the project itself. How can you be inspired by some of the artists to step outside your comfort zone.
