After my visit to the gallery last Wednesday, the two artwork that caught my attention are “Fight the Power Sisters” and “Black Goddess with Golden Lips”. Both artworks represent black women, beauty and women empowerment in general. According to “BURN: Origin and Resistance, In the beginning black women loved and lived in communities as leaders, teachers, healers, innovators, judges and mothers. Every artwork in the gallery represents the beauty of black women, every art is colorful and beautiful. However, all this works is activist since it has a huge impact on social change.
To start with “Fight the Power Sisters” this artwork represents beauty in the black women. The message that this artwork is trying to communicate is that black women are perfect and whole, from their hair to her hips, to her snap and her wit. It's a very beautiful artwork with nice colors that can represent all women in general. The different shades of blue that were used in the painting are very meaningful to me because for me the color blue means honesty and loyalty. The colors go very well with what the art is trying to express, the way that the artwork is formed, and the woman’s hair is exceptional. I think that the images that are placed in the person are synchronizing, it’s giving the art more personality. I feel like this artwork has to get more acknowledgement. This work specifically is considered activist for me because it is all about social change. Changing the idea of how the world sees black women to the point where she can be herself, loving herself the way she is and having a stronger voice to contribute to society which back in the days was near impossible.
The second artwork I chose is definitely my favorite and the meaning behind it is the reason. Every time I see this painting, I can reflect the history of the black woman before and what she has become now. The side with the fading I can tell it represents the black woman from before. While she had no authority, she had to remain silent and had no right at all. The other side shows the version of the black woman with rights, authority, and empowerment. The gold-colored lips are a symbol that the black woman can use her voice to make a difference in society and fight for her rights. It represents how powerful black women and women in general are now. The fact that this work can show so many things about the history of black women and it's made so beautiful and perfect it really surprises me.
While reading Kimberly Drews book I found a quote that caught my attention. On page 22 when she mentions “I knew that I wanted to record as many black artists as possible for anyone like me who needed to see more art by black people”. I really like this quote because she wanted people to know more about black people and the history behind it. I can relate to the gallery that had so many artworks that represent what it really is a black woman and their history giving people the chance to know about it and enjoy those amazing works.
Kimberly Drews is an activist with a passion for innovative art. While reading her book you can tell how passionate she is about the whole topic of black people and how important it was for her to make others know about black people and their history. Another quote from her that I really liked was “I didn't want anyone to say that black artist did not exist”. She was doing everything possible to make everyone know the importance of black people and little by little she was making art more accessible to underrepresented communities.
Now that I have talked and expressed my opinions on these amazing artworks that I have chosen, the selfie that I would turn into an art would be the one I inserted with a selfie of myself. To begin with I’m really fascinated by the colors that are in the picture, it has many radiant colors that describe myself. As a fact, every artwork at the gallery had amazing colors and a message of empowerment. With my picture I'm trying to transmit the same idea, the beauty of women in any shape or color. However, the visit to the gallery was really nice and the fact that people get to see every artwork so close, and we can learn about it it's amazing. I can connect the idea of the artworks with Kimberly Drew because for her it was really important that people knew about black people in general and this gallery represents black women in every type of way. Both the reading and the gallery were very interesting and I'm really glad I had the opportunity to visit the gallery and enjoy such amazing artworks.
